Not Your Typical Yoga Practice

I teach a gentle, therapeutically oriented, spinal release style of yoga. It is an integrative practice that reduces pain, releases accumulated tensions in your body, and gives you ease of movement, all tailored to your personal needs. Rather than stretching, this yoga practice specializes in releasing tension in muscles that attach to your spine. Tensions in these muscles pull your spine out of alignment, the root cause of much physical discomfort. Releasing these tensions in the core of your body creates a corresponding calm in your mind—you naturally enter into a state of greater mental ease. In each session, you will experience ways to take that release and ease with you into all that you do, enhancing the Ayurvedic practices you are incorporating into your life.

“Yoga practice is ultimately more a way of non-doing than doing. It is more a way of undoing. It is doing less, turning within, letting go, and surrendering.”

—Dr. David Frawley, american institute of vedic studies

Yoga offerings:

1.

Private Class

(currently available online only)

You will be taught a series of simple and effective yoga poses to address physical pain, injuries, mental or emotional agitation, and more, with each session tailored to your personal needs. The goal of private classes is for you to learn how to do the poses on your own in order for you to develop a daily home yoga practice. I will give you a home practice that meets your needs and fits into your time constraints.

2.

Yoga Therapy in Poses

(in-person only; not currently available)

You are assisted through a series of gentle poses selected specific to your needs, to reduce pain, increase mobility, and settle your mind. Each pose is fully supported with therapeutic propping, allowing for opening and softening into the pose. You remain comfortable and at ease throughout. You will receive hands-on adjustments from me while you are in the poses, chosen based on your specific needs, and used in order to deepen your release.

3.

Quintessence Yoga Therapy

(in-person only; not currently available)

Quintessence™ is often used for those who have a very limited range of mobility, are in chronic pain, or are experiencing acute pain. Many ongoing clients love Quintessence™ and request it when feeling fatigued, heightened emotions, ungrounded, or just because they feel so much better after. You rest in shavasana (a comfortable, relaxed position on your back), supported by lots of blankets. The therapy consists of soft, gentle touch on particular bones of your lower spine, which provides a very gentle but deep release of the tension in the muscles along your spine.

Yoga Therapy Overlap

(in-person only; not currently available)

Overlap is an intensive series of yoga therapy sessions done several days in a row, depending on the conditions we are working to resolve. In an overlap series of sessions, we may use either or both of Quintessence™ and yoga therapy in poses. Having multiple sessions in a row helps resolve issues more quickly and aids in developing new muscle memory of the realignments in your body so that the release you get can be sustained and injuries resolved.

“I started yoga therapy with Barbara due to nerve pain, but I kept going because I noticed so much positive change in my life. Slowly all my old injuries are clearing out. As my body has opened, my mind is able to settle and I am less anxious and stressed.”

—Kathleen riley, client
